The f/2 maximum aperture lets in plenty of light for hand-held shooting in indoor or low-light situations, and the nine-element design with two aspherical elements delivers sharp, contrasty images corner to corner. Autofocus is fast and nearly silent thanks to an internal focus system and stepping motor—the focus group stays put while only the rear elements move, so you get quick, accurate focusing without front-element rotation (great if you use a polarizer).
The rounded nine-blade diaphragm renders out-of-focus areas smoothly, making it a solid choice for portraiture, street work, or everyday shooting. Focus starts at 35cm, so you can get reasonably close without a dedicated macro setup.
